The San Gabriel Mountains Forever Leadership Academy is a training program of San Gabriel Mountains Forever (SGMF). The Leadership Academy was created to achieve the SGMF goal of training leaders to protect and enhance our mountains, rivers and parks with access for all, particularly among youth and in communities of color. Participants learn civic engagement, environmental protection, and community organizing skills and have the opportunity to develop an environmental advocacy project in the six-month program.
GRADUATES: Over the past five years, the Leadership Academy has graduated nine classes and a total of 80 individuals.

PROJECTS: Academy graduates have successfully executed 36 community engagement projects around Los Angeles, San Gabriel Valley and in the San Fernando Valley. Projects include painting 12 trash receptacles along the West and East forks of the San Gabriel River and organizing park-poor communities to care for public lands.
LEADERSHIP ROLES: Twelve graduates have traveled to Washington, D.C., to advocate on behalf of their community for the San Gabriel Mountains and Rivers. Graduates have landed employment with SGMF, the California Conservation Corps., the U.S. Forest Service, and the City of Claremont, and many serve as volunteers at various environmental conservation organizations.
Leadership Academy Winter 2017 Curriculum
The Leadership Academy meets alternating Wednesday evenings from 5:30pm to 8:30pm, and some Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Each academy session includes a skills-building workshop and interactive discussions on how the skills can be applied in environmental advocacy. The schedule is subject to change with advance notice. NOTE: Classes will be held in Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley.

the San Gabriel Mountains Forever Leadership Academy
This is a competitive training program for individuals who meet the following criteria:
A) Individuals must demonstrate experience OR interest in environmental protection related to the San Gabriel Mountains, River, and Valley.
B) Individuals must commit to carrying out SGMF’s vision of engaging diverse communities in protecting and improving equitable access to the San Gabriel Mountains and our public lands.
C) Applicant must live in the San Gabriel Valley OR within the greater Los Angeles region.
