SGMF Project: Convert-a-Can

The Project

Convert-a-Can is a project started in the San Gabriel Mountains Forever Leadership Academy. The beautification project brings together volunteers and artists to paint art on trash dumpsters. The waste receptacles are transformed into functional art installations in an effort to encourage proper trash disposal and prevent graffiti. Leadership Academy graduates behind the program, Kevin Lynch and Megan Devine, are pictured above.

The Progress

Since the project’s implementation by the U.S. Forest Service in 2014, Convert-a-Can has contributed to a significant reduction in graffiti and littering. Transforming regular dumpsters into interactive works of art beautifies picnic areas and trailheads and encourages people to treat mountain trails with respect — and to throw trash where it belongs!
