Rep. Judy Chu Proposes Legislation to Expand and Improve the
San Gabriel Mountains National Monument
Washington, DC (October 23) — San Gabriel Mountains Forever commends Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27) for introducing legislation to expand and improve the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. Today, Rep. Chu introduced the San Gabriel Mountains Foothills and Rivers Protection Act to establish the San Gabriel National Recreation Area, creating a networked park of open space in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County. The bill would also expand the existing national monument to include United States Forest Service lands on the western side of the mountain range. A map put out by Rep. Chu can be found here.
The bill has widespread support in local foothill communities that would see greater protections for popular forest hiking trails in Chantry Flat north of Sierra Madre, parts of the Arroyo Seco above La Cañada Flintridge and Pasadena.
“The expansion of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and creation of a National Recreation Area will benefit the entire region,” said Pasadena mayor, Terry Tornek. These wildlands are our back yard; they are not only cherished by local residents and visitors for their beauty – they are an essential part of our quality of life, providing clean air and water. This legislation will help ensure we preserve and enhance healthy outdoor recreation opportunities for families today and future generations.”
Under the proposed legislation, the National Park Service would coordinate a partnership of Army Corps of Engineers, State of California, Los Angeles County, local municipal, conservancy and other lands to enhance and improve outdoor recreation and conservation within the region. Permanent protections would be expanded within the Angeles National Forest, which provides 70 percent of Los Angeles County’s open space and one-third of its drinking water. It will also insure access for millions of nearby urban communities which face a severe shortage of parks and green space.
“This ongoing support and proposed expansion of the existing national monument, including the creation of a National Recreation Area (NRA) within our local mountain range is crucial to the health of the entire region,” said Daniel Rossman of the Wilderness Society and San Gabriel Mountains Forever. “It would bring much-needed attention and resources to improve recreational opportunities for both nearby residents and visitors to the region, while strengthening protections for our water supply and wildlife habitat.”
San Gabriel Mountains Forever also applauds the support of bill co-sponsors, Reps. Grace Napolitano (CA-32), Adam Schiff (CA-28), Linda Sanchez (CA-38) and Tony Cardenas (CA-29), who stepped forward to preserve our landmark mountain range, its forests and rivers and the health and well-being of the communities they serve.
