Press Release: SGMF Supports Proposed State Legislation to Protect Public Lands

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“PRESERVE CALIFORNIA” BILL PACKAGE AIMS TO INSULATE STATE AGAINST DANGEROUS DEREGULATION SACRAMENTO

LOS ANGELES (February 27, 2017)—The San Gabriel Mountains Forever coalition strongly supports a new effort by California Senate leaders to protect our quality of life, clean air and water, shared public lands, and the integrity of scientific research within our state.

The new proposed laws address recent threats to federal environmental, public health and worker safety regulations. Three bills make up the new “Preserve California” legislative package:

  • SB 49: The California Environmental Defense Act, authored by Senators Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles and Henry Stern (D-Canoga Park)
  • SB 50: The Public Lands Protection Act, authored by Senator Ben Allen (D-Santa Monica)
  • SB 51: The Whistleblower and Public Data Protection Act, authored by Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara)

“It is clear that the current administration is a threat to our environment,” said San Gabriel Mountains Forever Chair Omar Gomez. “We must defend our public lands at the local level and we applaud state actions like these to protect them.”

The San Gabriel Mountains Forever coalition is particularly grateful to Senator Ben Allen, author of The Public Lands Protection Act, for taking a strong stand against any attempts to roll back protections for our new national monuments and other protected public lands. In a written statement, Sen. Allen said, “We have a sacred duty to take whatever actions we can to protect public lands from any sale or lease that would result in their loss or degradation. SB 50 will put the state in a strong position to defend federal lands in California against those threats.”
